MESSAGE FROM THE COORDINATOR
Greetings! Autumn is approaching but let's
not think about that yet! Summer is our
time to do something different. Time for
rest and relaxation, hobbies, BBQ parties,
beachcombing and more! I hope you've
had a chance to make a change from
your daily routine.

Prior to September, set aside some time
to pray about your upcoming commit-
ments. Remind yourself what and who is
most important. By committing to just a
few responsibilities you allow someone
else to serve God in the area of her
passion!

Despite what I've just said, be sure to
meet regularly with a few lady friends to
share your trials and triumphs. Contact
any of our group leaders or form your own
group. Check out the rest of the news-
letter for opportunities in the autumn for
encouragement and spiritual growth.
God bless you all.

HEADS UP!
Heather Thomson, a member of White
Rock Baptist Church, is President of
Women in Focus for the Baptist Union of
Western Canada. Their Mission Statement
is to encourage and equip women to
discover and use their God-given gifts
with confidence and compassion.
Speaking for Women in Focus, Heather
suggests, "To acquaint yourself with
all upcoming events, visit our website at
www.buwc.ca/women."
Some of the initiatives organized by
Women in Focus for the remainder of
2006 and into 2007 may be of interest to
the ladies in our congregation. For
instance:
-Missionary Work - Women in Focus
across Western Canada have decided to
partner with Canadian Baptist Ministries
(CBM) as STEP partners. (STEP is the
acronym for Serving, Training, Energizing,
Partnership.) Plans are being made for a
two-week short-term mission trip to
Kenya from October 12 to 29, 2007. The
approximate cost is $3,500 including
airfare and accommodations.
Among many other things, here's a chance to visit the Carlines; to see a number of Guardian of Hope programs; to see the impact these have made on the local people and the communities in which
they live.

-Post-Graduate Education -
In the summer of 2007 an undergraduate two-year
Woman's Studies course will
begin through Carey
Theological College. The first
module to be offered will consist of an intensive four-day
accredited study course. The
course will be given by Barbara
Mutch, who is Vice-President
Academic, the Charles Bentall
Professor of Pastoral Studies
and the Director of the Doctor
of Ministry Program at Carey
Theological College.

-Funds Available - Women in
Focus wants to let you know that there is a $350,000
endowment fund which was
established to assist women
who would like to study at
Carey.

-Baptist Women's Day of
Prayer

- Once again women across our
nation will be gathering together on November 6th to pray.
Watch for our church bulletin
for further information. Look for
further details in the next issue
of The Olive Branch.
Alternatively, for more
information on any of the above
items, you can contact Heather
by telephone at 604-535-2598
or by email at

SIDE BY SIDE
An exciting opportunity for White Rock Women
to be a part of a wonderful Friendship Ministry!
Side by Side is a friendship ministry for White
Rock Baptist women that will be starting this
fall. We are planning a Friendship Retreat on
September 8th and 9th followed by the
Orientation meeting on Sunday September 10
(venue to be advised). At the Orientation a
profile card will be filled in for those who wish
to participate.
Two weeks later a KICK-OFF evening will be
arranged. This is very important as participants
will meet the friend with whom they will be
walking Side by Side for five months.

Lucibel Van Atta said that being a spiritual
friend to someone "requires no special talent or
God-given quality. All God asks is for us to take
seriously the task of nurturing and building up
other women".
Women of all ages are welcome …
If you feel God's nudge to be a Friend and share
in another woman's life by using what God has
done in your life to encourage and come
alongside her in the journey of being a Christian
woman …
OR
If you are a woman who has been feeling the
need to talk with another Christian woman who
has "been in your shoes" and with God's help
made it through and wants to support and
encourage you at this time in your Christian
life, then come and join us!
Watch the church notices for more information in August.

The Women's Friendship Group
The inaugural meeting of the Women's Friendship
Group took place in the Spring of 2006. The group then met in the evening on the last Tuesday of
every month. Our focus was on the book "What
Happens When Women Pray." We numbered
approximately ten each month, and the discussion which was focused around the book, was very
insightful.

This group is all about relaxation and taking time
out of the everyday routine just to relax over a
cup of tea and to share. Some women brought
projects along to work on. Our group made the
May Women's Luncheon our specific prayer
project and were very blessed at the results of
that luncheon.

We plan to resume our meetings in the Fall, with
the emphasis on outreach. We would be pleased
to welcome newcomers.

Why Make New Translations of the Bible?
(Gary Amirault, Tentmaker Ministries)
Because… English Changes! The English language
continues to change. It has changed so much
that English words written over 500 years ago are unintelligible to us today. Some words actually
take on the opposite meaning they once had. In
some places in the KJV, for example, the word
"let" meant "to restrain." New words and
expressions are added to English daily. An
American a few hundred years from now will not
be able to understand what you are reading on
this page. As long as English and other languages
remain fluid, there will always be a need for new
translations of the Bible.

The original 1611 "Authorized" King James Version
contained an introductory letter entitled "The
translators to the Readers." In it we find the
following sentence: "But we desire that the
Scripture may speak like itself, as in the language
of Canaan, that it may be understood even of the
very vulgar." How would you like to be called "very
vulgar?" "Vulgar" in King James' day had the
meaning of "uneducated or school children." It
was not meant to be a slur. However, today,
should KJV publishers put that very same letter
back into the "Authorized Version," many readers
would feel insulted. There are literally hundreds of
words in the original KJV which are either no
longer in contemporary English or the meaning has
changed so dramatically that they misrepresent
the original writer's meaning.
