PRAYER - by Adina Hartin
What is Prayer? Prayer is communicating with
God on a two-way basis. Talking with God is
one aspect. Listening to Him through His Word
and by His Spirit is equally important, if not
more so.
What difference does prayer make in my
life?

A day without prayer is like getting out of the
wrong side of bed on a foggy day in winter.
Prayer reminds me of God's faithfulness
and fresh mercies each day. It clears my mind
by bringing to the fore my purpose for living-to
glorify God and enjoy Him forever. All this,
sometimes even before my feet hit the floor,
before being clothed and in my right mind,
before coffee!
Prayer sets the tone for the day. Lord, give
me a grateful heart. Help me to see others
through Christ's eyes and treat them
accordingly.
Prayer is the filling station. My car won't run
without gas and my life won't run without
prayer. In prayer, God fills my cup with love,
reminding me that I'm loved with an everlasting
love so that when that "clod" cuts me off on
the freeway, it becomes an opportunity to
practice forgiveness. Isn't that what a
Christian is, one who practices righteousness
and forgiveness? It's time for a second cup -
of patience, that is! Do I need a refill on that
one!? Monday morning in the super-drug-mart
and the staff is all on one speed - dead slow
and I'm in a hurry! Lord, teach me to be
patient.
Prayer is my lifeline. Priorities are set for the
day, rather, for my whole life, one day at a
time. A place, a time, an attitude and a book,
the Bible, each day, first thing. Spending time
reading and studying God's Word feeds me and
leads me to prayer. They are so intertwined
that it's hard to separate the two. The Word
spurs me on to prayer. Prayer leads me to
praise, to worship and worship fulfills me. Lord,
I worship You; forgive me where I've failed;
change me, reign in me, Lord. Time with the
Lord in prayer cleanses, humbles, charges my
batteries, causes me to be aware of complete
dependence upon Him for strength, wisdom,
direction, power, for the very breath of life,
for everything. Thank you, Lord, for who you
are and for all you've done for me!
Prayer is a guidepost on the road to
maturity and must be followed.

The World reflects the shortfalls, the
blemishes, the sin, the weaknesses in my
character. Prayer is the means by which the
Lord changes me and conforms me to the
image of Christ.

What difference does prayer make in my
ministry?

Without prayer, there would be no ministry.
The Lord is my Source and His glory, my Goal (Phil.
1:20, 21).
The Lord gives ideas for ministry - in prayer.
The Lord gives strength in ministry - in prayer.
As each one has received a special gift, employ it
in serving one another, as good stewards of the
manifold grade of God (I Peter 4:10). The Lord
equips those He calls to service in ministry and
provides all we need: courage, creativity, wisdom,
guidance, energy-all through prayer! What a
privilege to be His servants!
The Lord produces results and gives the harvest.
He has placed ministry on a prayer basis. The
harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.
Therefore, beseech the Lord of the harvest to
send out workers into His harvest (Matt. 9:37, 38).
To God be the glory!

FRIDAY MORNING LADIES' BIBLE STUDY

Throughout the winter months the Friday morning
Ladies' Bible study group had to cancel their get-
together many times due to illness either to
members of this group or their relatives. However,
meetings resumed on April 22, 2006, and a decision
was made to continue to meet throughout the
summer on a "whenever possible" basis. We have
begun to study the three letters of John (I, II, and
III John).
We are a group of diversified ladies who come from
all different kinds of backgrounds. We are moms
with children of all ages-from school-age to young
adults. So, when it comes to sharing, it is very
interesting and colourful as we touch each others'
hearts and inspire each other in different ways.
If you are free on Friday mornings, please consider
joining our little group. We welcome all newcomers.

More "One Anothers"!

In the Summer edition of the Olive Branch
Newsletter, several "one anothers" were listed.
Here are yet more "One Anothers" for us to
contemplate as we desire to develop deep, caring
relationships with others. Try focusing on one per
month until the Winter newsletter hits the streets.

August - Carry one another's burden (Gal 6:2)
September - Forgive one another (Eph 4:32)
October - Speak to one another with psalms,
hymns and spiritual songs (Eph 5:21)
November - Submit to one another out of
reverence for Christ (Eph 5:21)
December - In humility, consider others better
than yourselves (Phil 2:3)"

WHOA!!!
Laughing, we ran after our hats! Having just
stepped out, from a protected pathway, onto
the beach, we were almost blown over by the
vigorous wind. With great force and blowing
parallel to the shoreline, it picked up the sand
and any loose piece of clothing! Turning our
backs to the wind, Mike and I decided to walk
with it making the first half of our stroll easy.
Inevitably, though, it was time to turn back. So
with hands clutching our hats, we turned back
to face the raging wind. As we leaned into it,
we could see the sand starting to cling to our
clothes. Struggling to make forward progress, I
wondered, "How can I make this easier?" "Ah,
I'll walk behind Mike. His body will cut a path
through the wind." As my footsteps fell into
rhythm behind his, my walk became easier.

I then remembered the words of Jesus, "Follow
me." He didn't say, "Go before me and I'll push
you into unexplored territory." No, it was:
"Follow me." That's right! Jesus has the power
to overcome the wind; to overcome my
struggles. He goes before me to show the way.
All I have to do is follow His example and let
Him lead me. As I love more, serve more and
forgive more, step by step my life looks more
like I'm on Christ's pathway.

Are you struggling with some issues? Does it
seem like you're fighting a strong headwind?
Let Jesus lead you. Release ownership of your
issues - give them to Him. Consider His words
and live: "Come to me, I'll show you how to
take a real rest. Walk with me and work with
me-watch how I do it. . . I won't lay anything
heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with
me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly."
(Matthew 11:28-30 The Message). This is my
prayer for you!

THE MUFFIN GANG is continuously expanding in
numbers. We are now at a steady number of
seven. There is one gentleman who, when he
goes for his walk, always stops by and shakes
hands with each of us. We call him our honourary
male Muffin member.
Our fellowship has become more close-knit and
we ladies are now ministering one to another. We
begin our time together with food and fellowship.
Each lady submits a personal prayer request,
after which we enter into prayer together. We
close our prayer time with the Lord's Prayer. At
the close of our meeting each one of us takes a
small card out of a promise box and reads out
loud the scripture that is on both sides. Although
it is not a requirement, three of the ladies last
week brought a Bible with them. We would like to
extend an invitation to everyone to feel free to
join us anytime on Saturdays from 1:00 to 3:30
p.m. at the Semiahmoo Mall Food Court. We'd
love to have you! For more information contact
the church office at 604-531-2344.

MONDAY FELLOWSHIP & PRAYER
We are very happy that two new members have
joined our group recently; one is Taiwanese and
the other Korean/Chinese.
Although we are not meeting on a regular basis
during July and August, we are not losing touch.
Those who are free are getting together on an ad
hoc basis for a walk and coffee or lunch. Two of
our members are away and two are driving a son
or daughter to summer classes. When there are
urgent requests for prayer we will meet at Nora's
house. We are looking forward to a picnic in mid-
August when we will welcome one of our former
members who is here from Korea for a visit.
Our first regular meeting is on September 11th,
when we will have a pot luck birthday lunch. We
will discuss options for a new study guide. We
have completed our book on the Psalms by
Eugene Peterson.
A few of us are reading a great book "The Power
of a Praying Woman" by Stormie Ormartian. Angel
Christian Supplies has the book and we would
highly recommend it.
